This afternoon one of my sisters, the only one who still lives in the same city as my mom, posted this picture to the family WhatsApp.
It's a picture of the bear my mom has on her bed.
This bear has been tucked away forever but has made a reappearance during my mother's nearly year long isolation in her house.
Now my mom is about as sharp, tough, and resilient as they come. She says that if the pandemic doesn't end soon she doesn't know what she will get up to next. Still the sight of this little bear, now 93 and the one my mother had as a baby, has really touched me. Note the nose darned by my grandmother, who I never met, who died when my mother was a girl.
The thing about the bear is that my mom recently knit her a new sweater. She says she is going to work on a new skirt next so the bear "looks respectable."
Now I don't know what is getting to me more. The knitting new clothes or the thought that this little bear has made a reappearance after all these years to be a comfort.

How adorable and heart warming. It is encouraging that your Mum is making plans for her much-loved companion. xxx
I know just how she feels. God bless her❣️
Oh my! I can picture a sweet 93 y/o lady knitting a sweater for her beloved teddy bear she has had since childhood. It’s made me cry. I buried my husband on Tuesday., Jan. 5 and my sweet mother the same week, on Sa., Jan. 9. My husband died of COVID, my mother fell and broke her neck. Tell yours I wish I could sit with her and maybe she could teach me to knit. What a blessing you still have her!
Creativity and the comfort of small things. That's what will get us through.
I'm far from my elderly parents too in this pandemic (they're in another country). It is hard. Sending you all my sympathy.
Nurse Bennett my sympathies, what a terrible time for you. My heart goes out to you.
This story brings me joy...thank you. I have my bear too - his ears are 'worn out' in the middles...I rubbed them to put myself to sleep when I was little. Your Mum is wonderful..the skirt is a good plan.
My mother is the same age, and has got dementia over the past year and is now in a nursing home. Someone gave her a soft dog shaped toy and she never lets him go, he is her baby and she has named him David. When she is "with it" she acknowledges that he is not real, but it gives her comfort.
good evening barbara... i do not comment on blogs very often but your bear story touched my heart. thank you for sharing such a personal story with us. you brought joy today to my day. thank you and stay safe
This is a much appreciated post.
And Nurse Bennett, my sincere condolences to you. I hope you have someone to near to comfort you.
Thank you for sharing the love. My prayers to your mom and to nursebennett
First to Nurse Bennett - I am so sorry for your losses. I hope you can find some comfort in this time of loss.
Barbara - I think it's pretty awesome that your Mother has found something that gives her comfort and stability. That she's clothing her comfort has so many psychological connotations to it and to me all in a good way. If this pandemic has taught us nothing its to find our comfort and joy where we can, to use that as a stabilizer as we go through.
I hope you and your husband are doing well!
