Hi folks.
At least a few times a week at least a sewing person contacts me directly to ask for help and/or an opinion. Usually I try to do my best over email but do recognize that sewing is visual.
So rather than trying to help out in writing I was thinking of putting aside some time for some video coaching, either through FaceTime or Skype. I am thinking of someone who might be getting to the high frustration level (been there many times myself) and think they might benefit from a second opinion or another set of eyes.
This may be something of no interest to anyone but worth making the offer. Of course there is no charge for these sessions which I have set up to be 30 minutes max each in a few places in my week when I have the time.
If you think this might be helpful here is the link where you can make an appointment for a chat. I will be in my sewing room at these times so needless to say the whole thing is informal.
Is this a good idea do you think?
Basically I am on a sort of a mission to get encourage more happy sewists, and like my free newsletter this is aimed I guess to new and returning sewers (sewists? I have to make up my mind).

Oh my goodness, I don't know what to say! It's an incredibly generous proposal! But perhaps you can charge a bit of a fee because it's your time going into it(quite apart from your expertise). But perhaps if you collate all these sessions then maybe we can all later benefit from you putting it in your next book! Or maybe you could video them and put them onto you tube later for other people having the same problems. I think you will have stacks of people wanting your personal tuition!!
I like your idea! I use YouTube frequently to figure out how to do things, but the ability to ask questions and get feedback would be wonderful! Thanks for making the offer to help.
Knitsnyc I am not thinking that far ahead, only know when I was a less experienced sewer I would have really liked someone who could look at something I was having trouble with and tell me what I could do to fix it. I am seeing these 30 minute sessions as sort of a sewing 911 but if anyone would be interested in regular online lessons say going along as they worked on a larger project that might be something we could work out. I know it is not always easy to find sewing classes. For now though I am just going to see how this idea on its own would work, I definitely want to keep these short sessions no charge.
I love your generous idea, I am sure you will be inundated with requests! I I can think of nothing I would enjoy more than a chat on Skype with you, I love your blog, know lots abut you and your lovely family and am in awe at how much you achieve. You know what they say, if you need help, ask a busy person! I have been sewing for many years and can usually work round any problems, but still learn new things through you, so sharing these problem solving sessions on video for us all to share would be lovely.
In short, I consider you a friend, however one sided it is, and regret that I do not comment more often. Angela
I think it is a terrific idea! I think it may save a few people from giving up sewing from frustration. And clarify some of those “opaque” pattern instructions where, when I read them, I haul out my Vogue sewing book and go my own way..
This is an over-the-top generous offer. I'm sure there will be more takers then you think. If there is a way to share these sessions with everyone, it would be great. I love your newsletters and have saved everyone in your own "Barb" file.

Oh my goodness, what an offer, I think you’re going to be inundated! I ridiculously think I know you and your family, as your writing style is so friendly. I think it would be entirely reasonable to charge for this service, I’d pay to have a chat about anything, sewing would just be a bonus! x
My daughter said she has really appreciated your tips for sewing shirts. And said that she hopes you will give some tips for sewing in sleeves. Don't know why she won't comment, but her forward mother will. Request for sewing sleeve tips? I think it is the difficult in easing sleeves that is the real reason for her request.
