O.K. there is a back story on this. Several in fact.
First it has to do with policy.
I have sort of a policy to try new profiles and shapes every season that are out of my comfort zone. Of course this produces a lot of should have known better garments, but it also has on occasion, useful occasion, helped me move ahead. Which when the alternative is to move behind is a good thing.
So this is what happened.
I have been noticing a general enlargement of shapes recently, as the fashion pendulum swings back from skin tight, and thought I should try some looser garments. In the past these outlines have not been good for me. I remember once trying on a bunch of Sewing Workshop garments at a booth at a sewing show and having the nice lady in the booth sort of agree that I looked more like a flagpole in a flag than a chic person.
However I have been thinking.
The end of May I am going to be doing some flying. To see my mom in Winnipeg and then on the Sn Francisco. What to wear on the plane and in spring is hard so I got the idea to try to make one of the Violet Knit Jackets from Stylearc, because it had that go over everything feel and was, back to where I started, completely outside my comfort zone.
However I didn't have any knit that was a coordinating colour in a weight I considered jacket weight.
About the same time I was pondering this serious issue I went to a sewing guild meeting where one of the women always seems to be snagging great yardage at Value Village (yes Lorna this is you). I however do not find anything good the odd times I have been there - strictly mauve polyester twill.
But then last week I was at VV trying to find a new heavy dish for Daisy since I dropped the last one. On a whim I cruised by the material rack and there it was, wool double knit written down to "as is" for $3.00 owing to a certain history with moths in someone's basement I am sure.
Well, I thought, why not? I can make a non wearable muslin in case I look like a flagpole with a wool double-knit flag. So I bought it, much to the amazement of the lady standing behind me in the line up.
At home I washed and hung it all out to dry and then marked numerous holes with tape so I could assess the situation. (Be assured I had a whole list of much more important life business to be taking care of when I was doing this instead).
This is what I was working with and this is how I had to lay it all out:
Pretty nutty I know and BTW I did press the fabric before I really cut out, these were practice photos.
Of course I didn't have enough fabric to cut the fronts double, as the pattern suggested, although I did cut out the bottoms double, which might have been too heavy in this wool knit. If you are sewing this pattern up yourself you might feel happier with something lighter like a ponte because the fronts and bottoms are doubled anyway.
To finish the single layer front edges I got out some ancient wooly nylon left over from some self-delusional Christmas project and did a 3 thread overlock with the stitches set a bit closer than normal, about a 2.
Here is what that looked like:
And here is the whole thing on me:
Now over to you.
Because this is so much not what I regularly wear I am wondering what you think.
I can certainly see the utility of a jacket like this but if you think I look like a knucklehead you should probably tell me.
Otherwise Air Canada here I come.

I think it looks very nice, however, I suggest a patterned scarf around the collar or a brooch on the collar to break up all the red.
I cant wait for you book
I think it looks great on you - very elegant!
Definitely not a flag on a flagpole, though it is red. Looks comfortable and warm and that's what you need on a plane. I like it!
You know, of course, that you look FABULOUS in that jacket and I like it so much I'm going to get that pattern too. I hope the jacket is wearable because you also look FABULOUS in red. Air Canada here you come.

I think it looks really nice on you. The color is very flattering to you and I just really like the style on your.
Def don't look like a "knucklehead".
A Question: Could you wear the jacket closed in the front – say, with a pin or a button and loop? Sometimes I get chilly and want to be able to close the jacket.
Vancouver Barbara
You look FABULOUS!!
i like the look on you- perhaps if you made a size or 2 smaller?
You look great!
I actually think it looks very nice, especially from the back. Have you tried to belt it? That's what I do when I feel like I'm drowning in fabric...
I'm in the minority here, I guess. I don't love it on you. I like the colour and the sleeve/arm openings but feel it is too long and doesn't suit you proportionally. As a very petite person I have to watch the "oversized" look. It might work in a lighter, drapier fabric...
However, if you love it, wear it!
Love it on you!
Does this jacket come in sizes or is it one-size-fits-all (ha!)? Because I think it is a really good style for you, but it looks a little big. I mean, I realize it is supposed to be oversize, but it may be a little over-oversize, especially the back. I find that with looser-fitting styles I need to go a size or two smaller than usual. For me, anyway, the look is still loose-fit without being overwhelming.
I do hope you begin to feel comfortable in the shape. I looks like a garment that is flattering and versatile, and could be layered over anything from a suit jacket to a sundress.
BTW, I think you look great in red too. ;-)
I think it looks great. I've considered that pattern - may have to order it after seeing yours
Marcia
I think it looks great on you and would be particularly good for travelling.
Not a knucklehead or flagpole. Good color. Back is beautiful. But I think it's too long/too much fabric/maybe too big in front. But on an airplane, I'd just wear it!
I love it as is! I think the size and proportions emphasize how long, lovely, and slender your limbs are in the most flattering way.
I'd make sure to wear it with fitted (like in your pictures) underlayers though. :)
Love it!
I am very small, 5', size 2 or 4. I am always skeptical of oversized clothing and very critical of it because it overwhelms me. So, take my perspective into account, but I am with the group that feels the garment is a tad over large.
I do love the shorter sleeves and the come, but the back view seems like there is a bit too much fabric.
Again, I think such judgements are in the yeye of the beholder. If you like it and feel comfortable, it isn't so large that people would wonder what was up with you. It is just a style I am not hot on.
I think it looks very stylish. No knucklehead or flagpole at all. I do think it is a little too big. I think it's a winner for all the things you want it to do plus you look great in it. I agree that it would look great if the outfit under it were more fitted (like what you have on). Just go down a size or two. Otherwise, I love it on you!
Just love it! You look great in red, and love how you "found" the fabric, marked the mini-damage with tape, and cut it. The style is fun. Maybe close with a broach to avoid drafts, when necessary. My fabrics are all from charity shops. Just finishing a LOOSE Dolman T dress, in striped knit. Cathie, near Montreal!
Excellent color, very attractive on you. It looks cozy for curling up on a plane, but less useful for walking around town lugging the odd bits that I always accumulate......altho the belt/sash idea might help address that aspect of things. I'm always a bit leery of coats that you can't actually close up to keep the chill out. But, on the third hand, RED is so great on you.

I love love love it, looks stylish with your trendy hair cut ;-). Having just completed the mammoth flight (s) to Australia and back, I can vouch that a jacket like this will be so handy!
Very flattering-the color is wonderful, and you look very stylish. Love it!
I like it. The fit through the shoulders looks good. The voluminous back and lower front just look like they are are part of the style. Not too big to my eye. Also that colour ! Love!
I like it on you also, but agree there seems to be a bit too much fabric in back. Possibly this wool is a little stiff for this design and would look better in a lighter knit? At first I thought the red seemed too much for you but it really does look great on. I would definitely wear and enjoy it as-is.
PS My mother always makes great fabric finds at Value Village and I am usually the lucky recipient! Almost always big yardages of woolens! I rarely have the same luck. Enjoy and keep up the good shopping.
KNOCKOUT!!!!!!!! You look absolutely terrific. Love that jacket, the fabric, and your great workmanship.
hmm, I can't decide. You have a lovely tall figure, and can make it work, but I can't decide if it is the best for you or makes you look a bit too long-waisted. And, I've always been a bit leery of 'jackets' that don't close up well/leave half my arms bare. I tend to be very pragmatic though, LOL! Bully for you for trying new things though, I need to be more adventurous.
I agree with Jodie so I also don't love it on you. The color is flattering but I feel the length is too long and the overall fit a bit too big. You have such a nice slender figure and I feel it is lost in this shape. All said, I do understand the comfy purpose of this garment and perhaps a softer fabric would be better. Karen
I love it!!! I think it is gorgeous on you, very stylish and you look great in red. Wear it and enjoy it...
Another question – did you lengthen it at all?
Vancouver Barbara
Barb...I love it! It looks like the sweater I am currently wearing and it's the garment I grab when I want comfort. I think it would be great for traveling!
I think it's awesome! Could it be a bit smaller in back? Probably, but it would lose a bit of the swing style. If it's available in one size smaller, you could go for that, but it's also perfectly wonderful as is. I now will be heading over to Amazon to order this pattern, as this will be awesome for our fall weather here in their Deep South. I'm so glad you made this! I have some denim I'd love to distress and give it a try in that. Love your blog!
I think, when you are on that plane, you will command RESPECT! (This is a good thing!)
I think it looks wonderful! Having just returned from a couple of weeks in Winnipeg I would have loved to have that garment with me!
Hmmm too big all around as I think you know. Great color though.
Love the colour on you and the overall style but do think it looks too big at the front. It may be the way it is hanging, but for me the lowness of the neckline combined with the pockets being too low for your hands make it look just a bit too big for you. I think the back fits perfectly though - fits across the shoulders nicely then has just a nice amount of swing. Just my personal opinion of course.
I think that looks terrific on you. The colour really suits you.
You are tall and slim enough to pull this look off but be careful to wear close fitting pants underneath so it doesn't look like you are wearing PJ's and a robe. Dare I suggest leggings?
I would shorten it by 2 or 3 inches to amp up the top/bottom contrast bu otherwise no changes.
This is perfect for the plane!
I love the colour on you. I really like the style and I don't think it's too big, I think that's the way it's supposed to look. If you wanted a jacket that closes you would have made one and I'd presume as you live in Canada you have plenty of those anyway. The point is a jacket for where it isn't so cold but you need a cover. Can you be too long waisted? Being nearly no-waisted, I don't think so. Plus the price is so right! If you feel good in it rest assured it looks great.
Love the sleeves and collar and the pockets are definitely a plus. Perhaps a size smaller though and in a fabric with more drape. You do not look like a flagpole though, its a flattering look to your height.
I think this looks really great on you! I am a big oversized fan, and would add that looser clothing always looks best in motion, as it moves around the body. It's fab and I think you should wear it :)
You look terrific wearing it and it looks like it is really comfy!
I love it, the colour, the shape, everything. So much, that I am surprised by those who don't! But this is life, so I say, trust your own feelings about it. If you feel good in it, wear it! I think traveling is a good time to try out a "new me"; we don't have to feel constrained by the ways in which we usually present ourselves. (Of course, comfortable clothing is also a high priority while traveling.)
👍what else can I say that nobody else has. It looks fab.
I think you look very nice in it. Red is good on you, and it looks cozy for the plane. The one color top & bottom look great under it. I like the way the arm opening looks. The shoulders fit well too. I like it a lot.
That being said, I can't stop myself from thinking about how to change it up for next time. If it were me, I would experiment with a drapier fabric. There is something that bugs me about the front hem area that seems sortof too firm. Might lose that awesome volume in the sleeves though... I would maybe slightly reduce the fabric in the back. Maybe raise the pockets to a more easily reachable level? But that's me. I can't even make breakfast cereal without trying to figure out how to change it for next time.
Could you belt it? A nice wide belt. That might look nice. The color is so nice and it looks very comfortable. Nice job.
