I am a mother, a grandmother, and a teacher. But whatever happens in my life, I keep sewing. I have worked as a political communicator and now as a teacher in my formal life. I have also written extensively on sewing. I have been a frequent contributor and contributing editor of Threads magazine and the Australian magazine Dressmaking with Stitches. My book Sew.. the garment-making book of knowledge was published in May 2018 and is available for pre-order from Amazon

Flypaper thoughts: quarantine version

  • Home now after an odd trip home
  • Double time
  • In the house for two weeks now
  • All good except Daisy
  • She has a very bad foot/shoulder
  • Trying to do telemedicine with the vet
  • If all else fails will have to leave her in the yard
  • And have someone take her in
  • Strange times
  • My DIL in Berkeley has a a cough
  • They aren't tested but she's been told to behave as if she has the virus
  • Two front line health care workers here
  • And a son and his girlfriend now separated by a border
  • Hard when they sail out of your own safe harbour
  • Not entirely patient with those who are noncompliant
  • We need to get this done
  • However
  • My neighbour left muffins at the end of the driveway
  • My son put his hand to the front window
  • My husband is cheerfully stress baking
  • I discovered a pattern piece I lost
  • I am getting that sock knitted
  • I folded the laundry as soon as it came out of the dryer
  • I am making sure I wear jewelry and my lipstick every day
  • I am using up all those Christmas bath bombs
  • And eating peppermint patties
  • I had a group chat with four seven-year-olds
  • I made a lesson plan for my virtual home schooling
  • Bees, capitals of the provinces, and creative writing
  • I am modifying my old 4th year writing syllabus
  • Work with what you have
  • I think later in the week we should do cover letters
  • And how to address an envelope
  • 6,8 and10, seems to me to be about time
  • I have an idea for fractions with coloured water and measuring cups
  • It occurred to me that I am living the life of a '50s housewife without a car in the Canadian winter
  • Pretty close to being that person anyway
  • Unpacking so I can get sewing
  • Need to see those stitches form in a line
  • Just want my dog to get better
  • Happy with our leaders here
  • That matters
  • Someone smart I worked with said to me once
  • Never stand too close to insanity
  • It is contagious
  • So true, so true
  • I think I will sew small things tomorrow
  • Important to sew in different proportions to events
  • I am thinking of you
  • One day this will be past

Thanks Barb for this. I’m an Alberta teacher on Spring Break getting ready to teach remotely on Monday...I’ve a houseful waiting out 14 days (as my parents live with us and just came back for the States) and my over 60 hubby and over 80 father have sore throats. Sigh....I keep making lists and look forward to the day this is the past

Thinking of you, and of Daisy. ... Your words matter, and they help. Thank you.

Hmmm. You say "I think I will sew small things tomorrow
Important to sew in different proportions to events". And I'm thinking that's a much better way to look at it. I'm putting the quilt project away (the one I haven't touched since getting it out). Then I'm pulling out the wrist pincushion and the small cross body bag. Much better plan. Thanks!! Love your sewing advice, insights -- and humor.

I'm so glad you got home safe. Hope everything works out with the vet, cuddles for Daisy.
These are strange days, we just do the best we can.
Thank goodness for internet communication, our family and friends are still in touch !

Thank you for writing about life that lives. People need a space to lament their circumstances, but the most interesting stories to me are how people continue to live fully in difficult times.

We are retired and this is all driving my husband nuts. He is a very outgoing person and always wanting to be out doing something outdoorsy with his buddies. I am a stay at home kind of gal so it is not bothering me much. I am missing eating out since I don't like cooking. Thank goodness for modern technology but I am finding myself sitting in front of my computer more and not getting anything useful done.
My daughters boyfriend has the virus and they are both in quarantine now. He is a med student and was exposed in a NJ hospital on rounds. My dtr is still asymptomatic.
Poor Daisy....hope you can get her help and that she is better soon.

Take care, this too shall pass.

My own actually-ancient parents (ages 88 and 83) are being sensible and mostly staying home and entertaining themselves. My 29-year-old daughter scolds me and my husband daily for not staying at home (well, Papa does, but he can work from home. I cannot).

Am not having any luck persuading Dear Daughter that 63 and 61 are only on the Edge of Elderly.

Am far, far more trusting of our county and state government's actions en regardant COVID-19 matters than those of President #45's administration.

And am busily railroading garments that need dark plum thread through my sewing machine and serger. And sewing on buttons that have come loose from summer clothing. And altering trousers to fit after a weight loss.

Y'all be safe. Take your vitamins. Wash your hands. Spread peace and light throughout your world.

So glad you made it home safely and so agree with this "Not entirely patient with those who are noncompliant" though I would word that a little more strongly.

Especially since these idiots want me dead - https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/03/24/viral-on-air-plea-captures-an-essential-truth-about-trump/

Seriously starting to wonder what the world is gonna look like once we come through...

Oh no, poor Daisy! I keep telling my pets to please stay healthy. SO much of my current sanity depends on their well-being.

I would like to leave baked goods for my neighbors--how do I do that safely? I don't want them to toss them out in fear of catching something. We are all pretty paranoid here in the San Francisco Bay Area, as you well know.

Glad you are home.

So sorry about Daisy and hoping she improves soon. Poor girl, awful to be in pain.
Teach those kids some real life lessons, like how to write a check or make a grocery list so that they can get in & out without forgetting something. They also need to know how to change a tire and the oil. Don’t forget, how to take out the trash, dust and wash clothes. Too many of the young adult generation don’t know how to do any of these things. More fun to learn these skills too.
Yes, this too shall pass, hopefully fast! Take good care.

A light note : I also used a Christmas bath bomb last night! What's going on with us ?
Thank you for making us smile.
Hope a quick recovery for Daisy.
Take care.

Hope Daisy's foot/shoulder start feeling better now that she's home and not in the camper environment. If it's the arthritis she's had problems with before, I hope the vet can fix things with some medication and (not too onerous) rest.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter-in-law. You've talked before about how sewing has given you the... skill? knowledge? grace? to accept when there is nothing you can do to change what is, accept the situation, and make the best of it. But it has to be frustrating and worrying. I hope she is better soon, and your son and granddaughter are fine.

Our little family is doing our best to stay home and stay safe. My husband and I are retired, so we have an easier time of it. Our son and daughter-in-law are with us while she is in grad school, she only on weekends until they shut school down a few weeks ago. My son still has to go out to work 5 days a week, which is worrisome, here in the county with the most cases in Maryland.

Me, I'm just doing sewing repairs. Fixing things seems to be what my soul needs right now when everything seems so broken.

Hi, thanks for this very helpful airing, and good sense! I am in Quebec, which is under almost total lock-down. I am 70, and Hubster a tad younger. Staying in we spend our time well, as madness isn't a pretty sight. Sewing features. And our cats! Stay safe and well. Cathie!

Carolyn- That made me angry, too, when I heard about it. Almost as mad as the 8 men who’ve died of the virus in my city are all black. *Someone* is not doing a good enough job getting the word out to everyone. Praying...
