I love this and had to think about what it was about this story that snagged me. I think it was the way this was told and how there was such a clear image of Ms Harnish. From the icy mud on her keys to the description about her personality. This is what good journalism does -- it connects us and helps us see things in a new light. It can even make me like fruitcake a little bit. Thank you for sharing this.

I'm from Iowa and it really can be that isolated here. I'm so glad she was found- and laughing about the fruitcake- dense calories!!!

Yes, well, Barbara, you have been admonished by the fruitcake goddess. Watch it, Sister!

Doesn't she sound like a pistol! And of course as one who loves fruitcake its good to see it in a positive light.

More baby pictures soon?

What an ordeal! I'm in Kansas, not far from Iowa, and we had that awful blizzard on Sunday. The wind and chill for this lady must have been quite fierce. SO GLAD she has been rescued. Thanks for sharing this.

I had to laugh at the juxtaposition of fruitcake and kambucha. I don't know what condition my stomach would have been in after 4 days in a car, but she sounds like a much stronger woman than me. :-)

And yes, lets let that be a lesson to us: no dissing fruitcake!

Humm. This makes me think I need to add a fruitcake to our car's emergency kit. What a great story. Thank you for sharing and congratulations on the new addition to the family.
