- For the past month I have been doing nothing but sewing, writing about sewing, and thinking about sewing
- I have been so happy all month
- Makes me think two things
- How lucky I am to have something that makes me feel that way
- How hard it would be if all you could think of doing was say dust
- Or watch TV
- BTW at what moment did anyone invent reality TV?
- Seems to me that we used to watch shows so we didn't have to deal with that
- Haven't watched anything but the news in months
- Second thing all this sewing related has made me realize
- I haven't lost it, not one bit
- There is zero difference between late middle-aged me when I sew as when I was 17
- I can do something that totally connects those two people
- At 7 Miss Scarlett feels the same way when she sews
- Wonder if she knows she is right now connecting with her 80 year-old-self
- Going to see those guys tomorrow
- They are on the Gulf Coast with the other grandparents who I also love
- We are going over to have the girls sleep over in the RV
- Those guys are a zany bunch
- Daughter texted me that the trip down was the worst trip in her life
- 10 hours with three kids up since 3:30 a.m.?
- How is that possible?
- Every one has to have somewhere to put their love
- That's why all rv folks who are older like us have a small dog
- Spend all those decades
- Listening in your bed to hear if that cough sounds like croup
- Or to hear the car safely glide into the driveway
- Or standing with the world's stupidest school supply list at Staples
- Wondering if the lines on the music teacher's requested exercise book are 3/8" wide
- Instead of 1/2"
- Will really matter at all
- But think maybe someone else has the right exercise books
- After all it is your kid
- A person doesn't just come to a standing stop on that stuff
- And then the big kids tell you Mom your job is done, enjoy yourself
- Which of course is why you need a dog
- Who will never say anything like that to you
- And lets you coo while you watch them eat
- And lets you brush their teeth
- Nothing wrong with it
- Have to let the flow keep going
- What a wonderful feeling to know that I will never have to retire from doing what I really do best
- This is the primary difference between sewers and professional athletes
- Imagine if someone had said
- You're 32, your best days of putting in zippers are behind you
- Proved to myself this week that my best zippers are now
- Watch out

About me

- I am a mother, a grandmother, and a teacher. But whatever happens in my life, I keep sewing. I have worked as a political communicator and now as a teacher in my formal life. I have also written extensively on sewing. I have been a frequent contributor and contributing editor of Threads magazine and the Australian magazine Dressmaking with Stitches. My book Sew.. the garment-making book of knowledge was published in May 2018 and is available for pre-order from Amazon

Funny that. I haven't watched or read news in months. Sick of it. Cant change it. Sewing instead.
Love these thoughts! Actually though while sewing connects me to my 17 year old self and those sewing dreams, I actually sew better now than I did then. Better tools, better fabrics, more knowledge and experience ~ though I wouldn't trade the journey for anything!
Enjoy Miss Scarlett and the girls! I love being a grandma, it's the best perk for the years of standing in Staples with that stupid supply list!
Love the way you think and can't wait for that sewing book!
Love this! You are so great. Looking forward to the book.
Every thing you say is always so relate-able. I would say it myself except you articulate incredibly better.
Remember when news was the reality tv!!

I have to say there is a pretty big difference in terms of skill and quality between sewing-me today vs sewing-me at 17 (or 12, which is when I really started to clothe myself with my sewing). A lot of that is due to folks like you and Carolyn (above). You have taught me so much! But in terms of the thrill I get from solving a knotty design or construction problem, or succeeding with a project I was told wouldn't work, We're the same person all right.
Thank you!

I loved this post, made me smile fondly, for all the same things. Been sewing now for, mmm, 58 years (yikes!), most things I do better now, like invisible zips, (not invented then), but can still do a perfect lap zip too. Pity the eyesight goes, even with special specs, and sewing black a bit of a nightmare. Love the idea that we connect with our young selves this way :)
I also really loved this post! Since sewing is my passion I certainly appreciate that I'll never have to retire from it (thanks for stating this). I'm so jealous that you have Scarlet who also shares this love of sewing. Enjoy! Karen
A wonderful, insightful list. The kind you re-read for the sense of belonging somewhere that it creates.
I loved reading this -thank you
Gillian
Loved this post as always but this one really made me smile. Sewing gives my life purpose outside of work, just hope the arthritis in the hands keeps away enough to keep going. At what age do they say mum you've done your bit? My son looked at me last week and said can you still pay for my phone .... he is 25!
Wow, I got stuck on the 10 hour drive with 3 kids....I think I would have bailed about hour 6 and started hitching. Lovely to hear how happy your month has been!

Thank you for articulating the thought that sewing connects us to all times in our lives. I feel the same way; it is the one activity that has always brought me a deep sense of contentment and happiness. Just like your granddaughter, I started very young. Many of my memories of my mother revolve around sewing, hers and mine. Now that I am moving into retirement, I love the increased opportunity to sew. I know a few people who worry about how to fill their time upon retirement, but that is not an issue for those of us who love to sew.
Haha! 32 and your best zippers are behind you! Fun read
