Well here we go folks, live and uncut with all the bugs completely not worked out. Daisy and I are learning this as we go and right now I just want to know if you can hear this and whether or not you think this podcasting thing is a good idea for development or too weird.

ReplyDeleteYour test podcast was great entertainment. Loved your tutorial on learning styles. It will help folks identify their own particular learning style. Some folk have a combo. I know I do but auditory learning isn't one of them.
Also spot on about saving money by sewing. I just spent $20.00 on a knit fabric, and not a great knit fabric, for a little grandgirl who requested a nightgown for her birthday. Twenty dollars is a pittance when I will hear, "It's beautiful grandma. I love it."
Still reading and enjoying your blog even though I don't comment as often as I should.

ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed your inaugural podcast! And your comment about the Singer sewing class (in summer holidays, not less) brought back such memories -- my Mum sent me to just such a class here in Vancouver (so I went on the bus downtown by myself -- the joys of growing up in the '60s).
In the 60's and even the '70s to an extent, you could save money by sewing as most things in the stores were not as cheap as they are today. But it is really only the everyday tops and teeshirts that are not economical to sew now, certainly anything "good" like a nice dress or coat is still going to be more economical to sew, bonus being it will actually fit properly (assuming I master the fitting issues I still have) and be in a colour and quality that I like.

Thank you for recording this twice so we got to hear your wisdom! : ) I do some recording for work/teaching and it's a challenge to get all of the technology working in addition to staying focused on the content. Then when the dog barks as I'm recording, all bets are off!

Your blog is great because I can learn something, but it's not so technical that I can't understand it in the five minutes that I drink my tea in the morning. I also like the blog because you sew things more similar to what I wear - which is not dresses.
ReplyDeleteYour explanation of auditory learners was a revelation to me as a librarian. I get so frustrated when a patron looks at an online form points to the text box labeled "name" and asks, "Do I put my name here?" Because of your podcast, now I wonder if these people are auditory learners. Still frustrating to me who learns through text and visual cues, but I do want to learn how to communicate with all learners, so thank you.

Barbara, thank you so much for the first podcast, which I enjoyed enormously. Really sympathise with your technical issues, am sure I wouldn't be able to get my head round those.
ReplyDeleteAs others have said, very, very interesting points about the ways in which we all learn.
It put me in mind of something from the late 1960's; the Nuffield Mathematics project, which I was introduced to when doing my teacher training in the UK. All the books contained a quotation which said "I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand". Seems to me we don't "hear and forget" after all. Or maybe only the non-auditory learners do. Or is it because we back up that auditory learning with "doing"? Fascinating stuff.
Can't wait for the next podcast and more Barb-wisdom.
