So here's a question. Is there a sewing task you just hate. Not that you can't do it. You just dislike it.
For me it's sewing darts. They are so boring, so repetitive, so accomplishment free. And often the little marks don't match.
I have a great TNT dress with 8 darts, I don't make it up as often as I should for that reason. How dumb is that?
How about you, what is your least favourite sewing job?
I'm not sure if this qualifies as a sewing task, but I hate the clean up. Threads on the floor, in the wheels of my chair, bits and pieces of fabric...necessary, but BORING!!! Everything else I pretty much enjoy doing!
ReplyDeleteWell, mending/alterations....I'll avoid those for a long,long, LONG time! Although, not sure if those are a specific sewing task...
ReplyDeleteI think cutting out is my least favourite. While I have a dedicated sewing room (which is looking kind of "black hole of Calcutta - ish" - a mess), I cut out on the kitchen table. So, there's no way to cut out and then leave it and go back to it later.
The sewing part - I love
Any hand sewing. Closing linings and facings are the worst. Not because it's hard, it just. goes. so. slooooooooowwwwwwwlllllyyy.
ReplyDeleteKristine said it for me - hand sewing. And pattern alterations when I want to just get busy and SEW! But they are a necessary evil so I just grin and bear it.

Mending1 I just sort of ignore it and hope it will go away. The pile keeps growing though. I find I do my mending pretty much only when I can't find my mojo. It comes back real quick after a bout of that!
ReplyDeleteHand sewing in general, but buttons in specific. I HATE sewing on buttons. Darts do come close second though. I think that is why I prefer princess seams.
ReplyDeleteLet's see... I hate doing alterations. Mending comes in a close second. Sewing on buttons and snaps and hooks I find to be a real pain, because so often, no matter how carefully you position, something slips and you're off by a bit and that ruins the whole lineup.
ReplyDeleteAltering finished garments, whether RTW or my own. I have a stack right now, 3 pairs of pans for DH (let them out at the waist), 2 for me (take them in at the waist and along the upper half of the leg), and a top for me, where I got black Sharpie ink on the sleeve and can't get it out. Off come the sleeves.

ReplyDeleteDarts, sewing buttons, altering finished clothes and I will add hand sewn hems especially on synthetics. It is impossible for me to make them invisibe.
Fitting - especially pants, especially without a knowledgeable sewing buddy. It's just so random for me, and with hit and miss results. I feel quite frustrated by it, BUT I live in pants, and so desperately want to have a couple of TNT pants patterns.
ReplyDeleteHemming! So boring. And almost done. Almost wearable. And you've got this tedious step that has to be perfect before any of that happens.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that pattern altering and fitting are the two things I hate most especially, like Kelley said, without a knowledgable sewing buddy. It's so hard to get acurate length measurements when done yourself.
ReplyDeleteIt's embarrassing to note that I have a long list of what I don't like....tracing patterns, pattern fitting alterations, buttonholes (always so annoyed that they are at the end of a project and could really ruin it), mending. I'm one of the few people that likes handsewing, maybe it's a throwback from my needlework days.
ReplyDeleteThat moment when I try on the pants for the first time. No matter how much time, effort, advice, and experience I have invested in the process. They still look like nothing I would wear out of the house. Up til then, I'm all optimism. After that moment, I abandon sewing pants again for another who knows how many months. Thanks for asking.
